Can 24 hour fasting help you grow taller?

I read in a magazine that 24 hour fasting increases the growth hormones.

Fasting enhances growth hormone secretion (check the link in the source), but I don’t know if it will make you grow taller. I don’t think so. But fasting in general is healthy and beneficial in many ways.

The most that I have ever fasted is 24 hours. I am currently on a 48 hour fast. Does anyone have fasting tips?

Losing weight would be a bonus, but honestly it just feels good to not have to worry about food every now and then for just a short time. It also gets your mind set that you don’t need all the junk food that Americans eat and it gets me into the mindset to eat really healthy after I fast for a short time.

should I fast one complete day. Can I drink coffee during the fast or is that cheating. This isn’t for religious purposes, I read that it can lower the chance of heart disease by 40%:)

It is healthy to do a 24 hour fast. The best thing to do would be to start in the AM, because then when you wake up the next day, you can eat breakfast right away. So i would do 6am to 6am. Make sure to drink a lot of water.

Drinking coffee is cheating on a fast if you add sugar and creme. But drinking it can be bad for you on an empty stomach, as it can give you the jitters and make you crash.

24 hour fasting?

My in-laws (to-be) are Mormon, and recently my fiancé’s sister’s hubby was diagnosed with a staff infection. The doctors are saying that unless they’re able to do something soon, they may have to amputate his leg. My fiancé’s mom called early this morning asking for prayer and fasting. Because she knows I’m Pagan, she also requested that I do “whatever it is I do” to help. I’m very close with my in-laws, so I’m fasting for 24 hours along with them.

Although it is not something my religion entails, it’s not me I’m doing it for; it’s for my brother – and my sister, and their family. So I imagine that (in addition to some health spells) the least I can do is offer my best shot, and I know that they’ll appreciate it.

My question is, what does fasting have to do with anything? It seems illogical to me to deny one’s body necessary nourishment to help a loved one (in this manner, anyway). I’m doing well so far, but perhaps understanding its significance better would help.
Please, no negative comments. I’d just like someone to explain this practice in more detail for me. Thank you.

Yours is a great question. Fasting helps bring the individual spiritually closer to the God in Whom we believe. We fast on the first Sunday of each month, giving up at least two meals and the cost of them with our tithing.

Fasting, other than those suffering from diabetes or other health issues, is good for the body because toxins are removed physically while the mind grows spiritually closer to Deity.

Understanding your beliefs are different than mine (I am not a Mormon), perhaps you can offer more besides your fasting to help tune yourself with your Deity and offer words of comfort and concern for the afflicted.

The power of individual prayer is a powerful tool, done in faith, to our God. I know little of Paganism, but I believe in your belief that their exists a Higher Being of sorts. Using what you believe, and the love you hold for your future in-law, I feel confident that whatever you can offer will be important.

24 hour fast and sponsored silence bad idea?

I’ve been asked if I’ll participate in a 24 hour fast and sponsored silence in public by wearing a locked gag. Having never worn one, can anyone comment if a) this is a stupid idea b) dangerous c) a bad idea in public. I don’t want to offend but if it’s more outrageous we’ll probably raise more money. Planning to wear tshirt to explain what’s going on too and carry a money bucket… (and any one know what short of gag would work best?)

Do Foot Pads Detoxify?

An NPR experiment on Kinoki foot pads tested to see if they’d drawn anything out of a reporter’s body.

Reporter Sarah Varney and her husband bought some “detoxifying” Kinoki foot pads and wore them to bed. In the morning, they both awoke find the pads covered in the brown mess that the advertisement had promised. But when they took the foot pads to a lab and had them analyzed and compared with unused pads, the used pads were almost identical to the blank.

Further experimentation showed that the “gunk” in the pads shows up if you hold the pad over a pot of boiling water. Who knew steam had “metabolic waste”?

I have received quite a number of emails from readers lately asking questions about these types of detoxifying foot pads; seems a lot of people desperately want to believe they work as advertised.

The Kinoki foot pads — as well as other brands — promise to draw out everything from heavy metals to metabolic wastes, toxins, parasites, cellulite and more, to restore your vitality and health.

I always questioned the value of this tool for detoxification, and, despite the lack of scientific research, the independent investigative reports above seem to agree: The likelihood that detoxifying foot pads work is slim to none.

However, certain foot pads may still offer some value – just not necessarily what they’re advertising. And, you’re not likely to get it from most brands.

Dr. Klinghardt Sheds Light on “Detoxifying” Foot Pads

In my recent two-hour Inner Circle interview with my good friend, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt — who is a pioneer and one of my primary mentors in natural medicine, and founder and president of the American Academy of Neural Therapy – I had the opportunity to ask him for his perspective and experience with detoxifying foot pads.

I came in contact with the foot pads about ten years ago through a Swiss-based company that was marketing the first foot pad in Europe.  The company is called Seguin, and they’re marketing the traditional Japanese foot pad.

It’s been out for over 100 years; the Japanese are using fermented bamboo vinegar.  Now, what struck me at the time is that this bamboo juice had to be fermented for nine years before it was used.

We tried other foot pads, and there was clearly an effect similar to acupuncture, where people’s energetic systems improved.

I did not see any significant triggering of detoxification—we just saw improvements in the autonomic nervous system, depending on where you put the foot pad.

Typically, by putting it on the soles of the feet, there is, in acupuncture, a relationship to the kidney meridian. And we did find that an improvement in urine, and in the organic acids. The kidneys bind toxins to organic acids, and the more organic acids come out, the more effective the kidneys are working.

And we clearly saw an improvement with that.

So, the benefit is not really relating to heavy metals, but more to the carbon-based toxins.

Then several other companies came out with different concoctions of things that they put in a footpad — that were not fermented for 9 years — other sorts of more exotic things, and they made all sorts of claims…

I simply use my muscle testing in my autonomic response testing system, and none of the [commercial] pads have held up. Some of them looked promising, but none of them held up and have become part of my approach.  I don’t want to say that all of them are bad or worthless, but the ones I tested certainly didn’t hold their promise.

There’s always an initial placebo effect when you do something like this.

Certainly I can say that bamboo vinegar in the original pads had clear benefits that we could also biochemically demonstrate, but I think there is a lot of questionable science out there with that, so I have stopped using them.

So there you have it.

There may be some biochemical benefits from the original Japanese foot pads that contain more expensive ingredients, such as 9-year old fermented bamboo vinegar.

But, as far as detoxing heavy metals and toxins, not even the original foot pads could accomplish that.

As the investigations by the NPR, ABC and MSNBC, Dr. Klinghardt couldn’t find any proof that the pads drew out toxins or metabolic wastes either.

Toxicology Lab Found No Toxins in Used Foot Pads

Like reporter Sarah Varney, 20/20’s correspondent John Stossel also took used pads in for toxicology testing. And, like hers, Stossel’s results came back negative. 

20/20 asked NMS Labs, a national laboratory in Willow Grove, Pa., to analyze used Kinoki and Avon pads from eight volunteers. They tested for heavy metals, including arsenic and mercury, and 23 solvents such as benzene, tolulene and styrene.

None of these common toxins were found in the used pads.

So what’s that brown, foul-smelling gunk?

It’s just a natural reaction between the ingredients and the moisture from the bottom of your foot.

Exposing the pads to moisture, either by placing them over a steaming pot of water, or putting a few drops of water on them will make the ingredients turn a darker color and emit an unpleasant odor.

Dr. Devra Davis, director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh and an expert on toxins, also conducted a similar experiment on her own, leaving the pads out overnight without their protective packaging. In an article for MSNBC she stated the pads contain “little more than green tea and vinegar,” and that the color and odor are likely the result of these ingredients “interacting with oxygen, heat or moisture.”

20/20 asked Avon and Kinoki for scientific test results showing the pads do what they claim to do, but neither company fulfilled the request.

Detoxing… For Real

Your environment does indeed have a profound impact on your health. Everything from the quality of the air you breathe to what you put into, and onto, your body makes a difference. You need to start your healthy lifestyle FIRST, before you start detoxing, so you have a reserve that your body can draw on to allow your liver to do its job properly.

If you fail to do this you can easily overwhelm your liver’s ability to process these toxic substances that are being eliminated and you will become VERY sick, wishing you had never done the detox in the first place. I have seen this many times, so please use some caution.

Ten years ago I remember how much I feared the idea of doing a colon cleanse. So much so that I easily put up with the uncomfortable experiences of IBS. (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) I still refused to do a colon cleanse. I thought I was eating healthy, yet I still had terrible IBS. I finally did my first of several colon cleanse and am very thankful that I did. If you are on the fence about doing your first colon cleanse here are just a few of the questions I get from people new to the idea of colon cleansing. Hopefully, these answers will help you decide if a colon cleanse is right for you.
1. How do I know I should do a colon cleanse?
If you are an adult eating the typical American diet you are in need of a colon cleanse. The more meat, processed foods, fried foods, cheese and dairy, sugar, sodas, alcohol, roasted peanuts and coffee you consume the more you are in need of a colon cleanse. If your diet is mainly raw fruits, vegetables, brown rice, lean fish and salads the less likely you are in need of a regular colon cleanse. It is my opinion that a vast majority of Americans over the age of twenty are in need of regular colon cleanses. Some of the obvious indicators that your body needs a colon cleanse are:
* Loss of energy
* Lack of mental focus and poor memory.
* Unexplained headaches
* Bad breath and foul smelling stools
* Constipation
* Skin problems. Acne, rashes etc.
* Irritable Bowel Syndrome
* Weight gain
* Protruding belly
* Strong cravings for sugar or salt.
2. Will I have to be in the bathroom every 15 minutes?
This is a very good question. Since every body is different it is not possible to give an absolute answer. There is a somewhat easy solution for people with this question. Start the first day with half the dose and see how your body responds. Another option is to start in the middle of the day and only do half of the daily dose the first day. Listen to your body. If that is too much cut back on dosage until you are getting results that are manageable. It is also a good idea to start on a Saturday to get an idea if the cleanse is going to interfere with your work. The whole idea of the cleanse is to rid your colon of excess waste and toxins so your goal should be to have three to four bowel movements a day during your cleanse. It also depends on what your are eating during the time of your cleanse. Large amounts of alcohol, coffee or sweets could aggravate your system even more while using the herbal components of the cleanse.
3. What should I eat while on the colon cleanse?
You do not have to starve yourself. One of the ideas of a cleanse is to give the digestive tract time to heal or mend. The less energy the body spends on digestion the more energy it allocates to healing cells and organs. So stay away from high fat content foods, greasy foods, processed and chemical laden foods, high sugar or salt content foods, large amounts of coffee, cheese and dairy, and alcohol. It is a good idea to replenish your system by feeding it good healthy nutrient dense greens or fresh vegetable juices. Eat more fruits and vegetables, brown rice is excellent for fiber and green salads. Use the colon cleanse as an excuse to start some good habits. Eat an apple for a snack versus a candy bar. You should try to avoid red meat. Substitute a smaller amount of fish or lean chicken or turkey (hormone and chemical free if possible.)
4. What can I expect from my first colon cleanse?
What most people say is that they feel lighter. They may lose only two or three actual pounds, but it was toxic sludge that they eliminated from their system. People say they have more energy, have fewer colds, their memory has improved, less gas, skin and hair is improved, bad breath is eliminated, less facial breakouts and they just feel much more alive and less irritable. Some people report losing more than 5-10 pounds during a typical two week colon cleanse, but on the average most people lose two to five pounds. Most people come away from a colon cleanse saying: “Wow! That was really worth the effort!”
5. How often do I need to cleanse.
Most cleansing specialists say you should do a colon cleanse four times a year or with each changing season. In today’s busy world that is sometimes difficult to do. I applaud clients who are able to do two or three cleanses every twelve months. Although you will experience real results from your first colon cleanse the average person has a ways to go. Remember, the average adult has years of impacted fecal matter clogging your intestinal walls. It comes away a layer at a time. It took years to accumulate and will not go away overnight. You will feel better after each cleanse you do as long as your diet cooperates with your colon cleansing routine. An occasional diet let down is normal, so don’t be hard on yourself!
6. Are there any exercises I can do to help with my colon cleanse?
This is a good question. Any exercise that gets the blood flowing helps to start moving impurities out of the body. Exercises that stimulate the lymph system such as jogging or jumping on a trampoline are especially good. Stretching and any yoga exercises are also good. There is one set of exercises I recommend.
